Augustus , the first Emperor In BC the Romans expelled the last king from their city and established an oligarchic republic. Rome then began a period characterised by internal struggles between patricians aristocrats and plebeians small landowners , and by constant warfare against the populations of central Italy: Etruscans, Latins, Volsci , Aequi , Marsi. In the same period, the bankruptcy of the small farmers and the establishment of large slave estates provoked the migration to the city of a large number of people. The continuous warfare made necessary a professional army, which was more loyal to its generals than to the republic. Because of this, in the second half of the second century and during the first century BC there were conflicts both abroad and internally: After his victory, Caesar established himself as dictator for life. Rome was confirmed as caput Mundi , i. During its first two centuries, the empire saw as rulers, emperors of the Julio-Claudian , Flavian who also built eponymous amphitheatre, known as the Colosseum and Antonine dynasties. After the end of the Severan Dynasty in the Empire entered into year period known as the Crisis of the Third Century during which there were numerous putsches by generals who sought to secure the region of the empire they were entrusted with due to the weakness of central authority in Rome.

Marriage in Roman times began as a sacred institution. Patricians married only patricians, and they were married in the stately form of marriage called confarreatio the only legal form of marriage at the time. The patrician took his bride from her father’s family into his own, with the direct consent of the gods revealed by the auspices , in the presence of representatives of his gens. In this form, the wife passed in manum viri under her husband’s authority and her husband would also become, in a way, her master.
The ceremony involved the joining of hands of the bride and groom by the pronuba a matron who had been married only once and was still living with there husband in front of ten witnesses, representing the ten clans of the curia, an old patrician division of the people. The term confarriato came from the cake of far spelt, an old variety of wheat , which was dedicated to Jupiter by the high priest and the priest of Jupiter.

Sukanya Mukherjee June 15, While municipality contractors at Tiberias — an Israeli city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee — recently unearthed a 2, year-old burial cave , construction work entailing the extension of the aqueduct on the outskirts of Rome has now uncovered an ancient tomb that, researchers believe, has remained untouched for several thousand years. Dating back to the 4th century BC, the tomb was found somewhat accidentally, when builders excavating in the area spotted a chamber around two meters below the ground using a laser survey.
Further digging, in turn, revealed a perfectly-intact tomb housing the remains of four people — including three men and one woman — along with a range of burial accouterments like chicken, rabbit and even lamb. Calling it sheer luck, Rome-based archaeologist Francesco Prosperetti said the following about the finding — Had the machine dug just four inches to the left, we would have never found the tomb.
Historically, strigils refer to blunt metal hooks that were used by Romans to scrape off sweat and dirt while bathing. In ancient Greece and Rome, the instrument was commonly used by athletes to wipe off sweat, especially after sport. Based on preliminary analysis of the skeletal remains found inside the 2, year-old tomb, the researchers have concluded that, of the three men, one was aged 50 at the time of his death, while another was in his 30s. Both of these men were laid out on counters in the burial site.
The third man, aged somewhere between 35 and 45, was found lying on the ground, along with a woman whose age has not yet been determined. Apart from the bodies, the archaeologists have also discovered an array of incredibly ornate grave goods, including plates, jugs, black ceramic items with vegetal and geometric motifs, among other things. Alongside these, the ancient tomb contained remnants of dishes prepared from chicken, rabbit and what appears to be lamb or goat.
These offerings, as per the researchers, were meant to sustain the deceased in the afterlife. The inscriptions on the coin have, in turn, helped the researchers date the tomb somewhere between circa BC and BC, which was essentially part of the Republican period of Rome. The Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma, the body tasked with preserving the rich heritage of Rome, has announced that the newly-found tomb and its contents will be studied thoroughly in the coming months.

Thought to be an ancient Roman ornamental drain cover, the disk certainly provides plenty of amusement and maybe just a shiver as you take the test.
